What a Wonderful World

There’s always one song that seems as though it’s been in our lives from the day we were born. We don’t recall the first time we heard the song; it’s just been there since the beginning.

What was my reaction, then, when my song was re-recorded by new artists with a different style?

“What a Wonderful World” by Chris Botti, featuring Mark Knopfler

Despite the fact that my favorite musician sang the song, I was a bit skeptical before hearing it the first time. Thankfully, my fears were unfounded.

This song has what I like to call “The Three Smooths”: Mark Knopfler’s rich, deep voice, his subtle, masterfully played guitar, and the crystal clear perfection that is Chris Botti’s trumpeting.

I can’t say that I like this version better or worse than what Louis Armstrong gave us so long ago. Armstrong’s version is what will always have a loving place in my heart and bring back happy memories of my childhood and the innocent world in which I lived.

This version is obviously different, yet it is quite apparent that great effort was taken by both artists to honor Louis Armstrong’s original. Chris Botti, himself a master of the trumpet, uses this song to honor the man for whom I suspect he holds a great deal of admiration.

Both versions now hold a special place in my musical library, and will hopefully evoke those fond memories for me to a ripe old age.

Many thanks to Youtube User QuinnlTraylor for uploading this fantastic version of a fantastic song.
